Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

(Otoplasty)

Prominent or ‘bat’ ears are a common and normal variant of ear shape. Nonetheless children and adults with prominent ears are often extremely self conscious about the appearance of their ears and may endure considerable teasing from their peers.

Otoplasty refers to any procedure to alter the external appearance of the ear. Otoplasty for prominent ears involves manipulation of the ear cartilage to create more defined folds and/or resetting the position of the ear closer to the head. This procedure is performed through an inconspicuous scar on the back of the ear. Otoplasty is a relatively straightforward procedure which is tailored towards the individual needs of each patient. Dr Boorer aims for a very ‘natural’ appearing result. She specifically avoids overcorrection as this can appear unusual.

There are numerous other less common variations of external ear shape which may also be improved with surgery.
